About this Episode
As part of our on-going discussion of the Cross Cutting Concepts in the NGSS, we examine Scale, Proportion and Quantity in this week's episode. We discuss the challenges with teaching these concepts and provide some solutions as well. Here are some of the resources we share in this episode:
Next Generation Science Standards
Cross Cutting Concepts (pdf download)
Powers of Ten
Zoom Book by Istvan Banyai
We also discuss some research on students' challenge with scale including:
Tretter, T.R., Jones, M.G., Andre, T., Negishi, A., & Minogue, J. (2006). Conceptual boundaries and distances: Students’ and experts’ concepts of the scale of scientific phenomena. Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 43 (3), 282–319.

In our discussion, we compare how the students' development sense of scale can be compared to science knowledge outlined in A Private Universe
